Manchester United are hopeful of extending left-back Luke Shaw’s contract ahead of its expiration in June 2023, reports Fabrizio Romano. The Red Devils want the Enlgand international to follow in the footsteps of Bruno Fernandes, who recently prolonged his deal with the club last week.
Even if Shaw chooses to leave the club upon the conclusion of his current agreement, he would have completed a decade at the club. The player joined the ranks of the Red Devils in 2014 from Southampton for a 30 million pounds fee, making him the most expensive teenager in the world at the time.
Injury-laden early years meant Shaw amassed only 66 appearances between 2014 and 2018. His breakthrough season at United came in 2018/19, when, despite the mid-season managerial change, he international registered 40 appearances across all competitions and scored his first goal in red – four years after signing for the club.
Since then, Shaw has been a regular fixture for the Red Devils on the left side of the defence, as he has been for this national team; the 26-year-old scored the opening goal for England in the 2020 Euro final, which they eventually went on to lose to Italy on penalties.
Shaw’s current deal – which he extended back in 2018 – has him contracted to the club until 2023, with the option to extend it by another year. However, United are keen to lock him down for the long-term and are preparing to open negotiations with his representatives with a view to doing the same in the coming weeks.
A new deal could also see Shaw earn more than he is currently earning at the club; the agreement he signed back in 2018 pushed his weekly wages up to 150,000 pounds, which, at present, ranks him far below some of the other key first-team players in the squad.
