GT produced a clinical performance with bat and ball to seal a comfortable win over DC and win both matches in the Indian Premier League 2022 so far. The tournament newcomers lost the toss and were put in to bat by Delhi Capitals.
Shubman Gill was in top form for the Titans, slamming some eye-catching shots on his way to spectacular half-century. While the side lost Matthew Wade early, Gill and Vijay Shankar rebuilt, although the latter was a tad too slow.
Gill made up for it with his ambitious stroke-play and extravagant hitting against spin in particular and raced to his highest score in the IPL. He was soon joined by Hardik Pandya promoted up the order like in the last game. Although Hardik wasn’t as slow as Shankar, he couldn’t quite middle the ball on a tacky surface.
There was no such qualms for Gill, who compiled a fine knock to put GT in the driving seat. David Miller and Rahul Tewatia gave Gujarat 171 in their 20 overs, a total that seemed a tad tough to defend, especially with the dew around.
Delhi were struggling from the word go as they lost a wicket in the second over with Hardik Pandya, taking the new ball, sent back Tim Seifert. Delhi went on to lose two more wickets in the first six overs as gloom descended in the camp.
Rishabh Pant revived the innings with some controlled aggression in the company of a confident Lalit Yadav. The duo put Delhi on course with a terrific stand, and as Pant later revealed, the total was only par, and Delhi had decent firepower down the order.
However, an unfortunate runout saw Lalit Yadav depart for 25, and two overs later, Pant and Axar Patel were gone in the same over as Lockie Ferguson struck twice in quick succession.
The New Zealand quick crushed the morale and Rashid Khan dent in further with another big strike to leave Delhi well behind the game. Eventually, a few lusty blows from Kuldeep Yadav reduced the margin of victory, but it was still Gujarat all the way in an impressive win.
Brief scores
Gujarat Titans 171/6 in 20 overs (Gill 84, Hardik 31, Mustafizur 3/23) beat Delhi Capitals (Pant 43, Lockie Ferguson 4/28) by 14 runs.
