Real Madrid left-back has been very impressive with his performances lately. He has attracted considerable attention, and PSG and Juventus are expected to engage in a tussle to acquire his services this summer.
Spanish outlet Fichajes report that both the clubs are exploring the idea of signing Mendy in the summer transfer window and have made contacts with the player’s representatives. The French could depart the Santiago Bernabeu this summer, and Los Blancos are also searching the market for a suitable left-back to replace him.
Mendy moved to Madrid in the summer of 2019 after leaving Lyon. While it was expected that the big shoes of Marcelo would be difficult to fill on the left-flank, he found instead success and soon became a starter, relegating the Brazilian full-back to the bench.
The player has been consistently impressive over the last two and a half years and has made 94 appearances for the Spanish giants, scoring four goals and assisting another six during this period.
However, uncertainty might force him to seek a move elsewhere this summer, and PSG and Juve have emerged as the likely destinations. Los Merengues have reported that Mendy has been asking for a new contract and a fatter paycheck which Real Madrid are not considering to fulfil, especially in a trying financial situation.
The Bianconeri are in desperate need of reinforcements in the full-back department and especially on the left flank. Alex Sandro has endured a sharp decline in quality and has hardly performed at his best.
The lack of competition for the left-back slot also makes the situation worse, and manager Massimiliano Allegri has had to play Mattia de Sciglio as a makeshift left-back, considering Luca Pellegrini’s unimpressive performances. The addition of Mendy will immensely help Allegri in consolidating the defence.
PSG’s decision to invest in Mendy is somewhat surprising. They signed Nuno Mendes on loan from Sporting this summer, and the Portuguese has been umpressive so far. Therefore, a permanent move to Paris seems to be only a matter of time for Mendes, who is also young and confident. PSG also have depth in Juan Bernat and Layvin Kurzawa for the left-back position.
