After a transfer to Manchester City fell through last summer, Tottenham’s Harry Kane could join their rivals Manchester United this time around. The striker is on the Red Devils’ striker shortlist, but so is Benfica’s Darwin Nunez.
Facing a potential attacking crisis next summer, United are considering making a move for the Spurs striker. As per The Athletic, the club sees a forward as a priority target for the upcoming transfer window but would also like to add a right-winger, a defensive midfielder, and an attacking midfielder to the squad; Kane, being the top target for the first position.
As per the report, the red Devils conceded the race to rivals City last summer, when a mega-money move for Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho took their attention away from Kane.
But, as it happened, the forward’s proposed transfer to City fell through after both teams refused to budge from their respective valuations of the player, presenting United with another opportunity to have a go at the player this summer.
The Citizens, as it stands, are unlikely to return to the player; multiple reports this past month have confirmed that the club is in talks to sign Erling Haaland from BVB.
A key development as per the rumor in the Kane saga is that super-agent Jorge Mendes has independently begun the search for his heir at Tottenham. Mendes has lined up AS Roma’s Tammy Abraham – formerly of Chelsea – and SL Benfica’s Darwin Nunez as the Englishman’s potential replacements, should he complete a move away from Spurs in the upcoming summer.
Nunez is also an option for the position up-front at Manchester United, but the club could face competition from Arsenal for his signature.
Presently, United are facing a battle to fill their attacking spots for the 2022/23 season. Edinson Cavani will leave upon contract expiry this summer, while Marcus Rashford, too, has been linked with a move away. Mason Greenwood hasn’t played for the club since January due to an ongoing police investigation and Anthony Martial is already out of the club, albeit temporarily, as he is spending the latter half of the current season on loan at Sevilla.
