Despite going 0-1 down against Real Sociedad, La Liga table toppers Real Madrid showed plenty of character to complete a wonderful comeback.
The visitors stunned the Santiago Bernabeu after Mikel Oyarzabal put them into the lead from 12 yards inside the first 10 minutes. David Silva was fouled inside the box by Eder Militao and the Spain international made no mistake from the penalty spot.
While Real Sociedad looked in an extremely comfortable position, they had to surrender their first-half advantage after two quick goals from Los Blancos towards the closing stages of the first half. Exciting French signing Eduardo Camavinga restored parity after a brilliant strike that found the corner of the net from 25 yards.
Karim Benzema then slotted the ball into the back of the net but his celebrations were cut short by the referee’s offside flag. Ancelotti’s men went ahead through midfield maestro Luka Modric only minutes later and his goal was even better than Camavinga’s. The Croat shifted the ball on to his left foot and whipped a swerving strike with plenty of power and Sociedad keeper Alex Remiro had no chance of stopping that.
Benzema then saw another goal disallowed as Rodrygo was found offside by VAR in the buildup. However, he finally made amends and found the back of the net following a penalty kick awarded to Real Madrid after Elustondo brought down Vinicius Jr in the box.
Marco Asensio put Sociedad out of their misery after Daniel Carvajal’s brilliant cut-back found Asensio with only an open net in front of him. Carlo Ancelotti’s side now have an eight-point lead over Sevilla in the LaLiga standings and will be brimming with confidence ahead of their midweek Champions League Round of 16 fixture against Paris Saint-Germain.
