Nick Candy, a British property developer, is said to be interested in buying Chelsea from Roman Abramovich. Candy is ready to submit a 2.5 billion offer for the club and plans to redevelop their home ground, Stamford Bridge.
The Chelsea sale has attracted interest from across the Atlantic, from Egypt, from Turkey, and from Saudi Arabia. However, the latest reports speak of an interested individual much closer to home. Nick Candy, a British property developer, is in talks with a consortium to submit an offer for Chelsea – thought to be in the region of 2.5 billion pounds.
The 49-year-old is a fan of the Blues and confirmed to the Telegraph his intentions of formulating an offer with the hopes of agreeing to a deal with Abramovich. Candy intends to focus on the redevelopment of Stamford Bridge, Chelsea’s current home. A statement from his office confirmed the same, as per the report.
“The club deserves a world-class stadium – and Mr Candy’s unique expertise and background in real estate would be a hugely valuable asset to delivering this vision,”
it read.
An earlier report claimed that prospective buyers have been put off by the projected costs of redeveloping the stadium – which could reach up to 1 billion pounds. Abramovich’s attempt to remodel the stadium hit stumbling blocks, and the project was shelved for the time being, leaving Chelsea with the lowest capacity stadium out of all the top six sides.
As such, Candy’s promise of leading Chelsea into a shinier, newer, and bigger Stamford Bridge stands out. Despite that, the talks between his group and Abramovich’s representatives are yet to enter an advanced stage. Instead, it is the group involving Tod Boehly, Hansjorg Wyss, and other unnamed individuals who have put a bid in with the Raine Group – the bank tasked with overseeing the sale of the club – and are presently awaiting Abramovich’s response. Chicago Cubs’ owners, the Ricketts family, have also been credited with a strong interest in recent days.
