Indian opener Prithvi Shaw has reportedly failed to record the minimum score in the necessary yo-yo test at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, stated PTI. The 22-year-old scored less than 15 when the BCCI’s mandatory requirement for each of the male cricketers is to reach the 16.5 mark.
The young right-hand batter was at the NCA as part of a pre-season camp along with several other Indian cricketers but couldn’t achieve the desired mark on the mandatory yo-yo test scheduled at the end of the camp.
“These are just fitness updates. Obviously, it doesn’t stop Prithvi from playing for Delhi Capitals in IPL,”
a BCCI source privy to the developments was quoted as saying by PTI.
The source clarified that failing the yo-yo test doesn’t act as a hurdle to Shaw’s participation in the Indian Premier League 2022, which starts on March 26.
There also seems to be an understanding within the NCA think-tank that playing back to back Ranji league games as Mumbai captain may have had something to do with Shaw’s yo-yo test performance.
“He has played three Ranji matches back-to-back. Once you play three first-class games on the bounce, the fatigue can also affect your yo-yo score,”
the source said.
India’s white-ball specialists, not involved with the just concluded India-Sri Lanka Test series, were all called up for the pre-IPL camp at the NCA, which lasted a span of 10 days from March 5 to 14. The NCA officials monitored players’ fitness and conducted a yo-yo test at the end of it to keep a track of all of them in what is a busy season ahead.
Also present at the NCA was premier allrounder Hardik Pandya (Gujarat Titans), who impressively passed the fitness test despite being away from action since the end of the T20 World Cup in the UAE last November. Hardik, who has been under rehab to completely resolve a longstanding back issue, also bowled during his stay at the camp.
The source confirmed to PTI that Hardik gave a yo-yo test recording of 17-plus and bowled in the range of 135 kmph, which bodes well for India’s white-ball set-up that has to manage around his inability to bowl at full tilt for a while now.
