The Toffees have officially demanded an apology from the Premier League regarding a refereeing decision that went against them in their recent 1-0 loss against Manchester City.
Following a controversial 1-0 loss to league leaders Manchester City, Everton have decided to lodge an official complaint to the Premier League about its officiating and demanded an apology in return.
Everton manager Frank Lampard did not hold back after his side’s 1-0 loss to City. The former Chelsea midfielder, agitated at a handball decision that went against his team, claimed that the officiating was incompetent in the match – an opinion that has been shared by teams and fans throughout the season.
“The decision is incredible, incredible, and that loses us the opportunity to get what we deserved,”
“That’s a VAR call. That’s Chris Kavanagh, I spoke to the referee and they know it is a penalty, the question is that is it offside and it wasn’t. That’s the reason we have VAR. It wouldn’t have needed more than five seconds to know it was a penalty.
“We’ve lost a point because of a professional who cannot do his job right. You start searching for whys and I can’t think why. It is so incompetent to get it wrong.”
Lampard told the media.
The incident in question took place in the 84th minute of Everton’s league game against City when Rodri – the player in question – controlled the ball with his hand inside his own penalty box.
However, referee Paul Tierney judged the Spaniard not to have illegally handled the ball, a decision which was later endorsed by referee Chis Kavanagh through VAR. Everton, it is believed, are not only demanding an apology from the league for this one-off incident but have also voiced concerns over the inconsistent quality of decisions in their recent league matches. The league is yet to issue a response at the time of writing.
The loss means Everton are dangling perilously close to the relegation spots. The switch in managers hasn’t worked for the Toffees as expected, with Lampard losing three of his first four league games in charge – and his team now 17th, a point above 18th-placed Burnley.
