Manchester United interim boss Ralf Rangnick has denied reports of a fallout between two of his players. The German claims that there is no love lost between Harry Maguire and Cristiano Ronaldo after rumors emerged of a possible captaincy switch from the former to the latter.
Reports of friction between Maguire and Ronaldo emerged, claiming that the former was involved in a power struggle with the latter. The German denied the same, before confirming that the England international would remain the club’s captain until the end of the season.
“Well, to start with, I must say this is absolutely nonsense,”
Rangnick said, as per ESPN.
“I have never spoken with any player about a possible change of captaincy, this has never been an issue for me.
“It’s me who decides who’s captain. Harry is our captain and will stay our captain until the end of the season and there is nothing else to that.”
Maguire himself shut down the reports through Twitter. The Englishman claimed that the rumors swirling around were untrue and that the team was focused ahead of the weekend’s clash against Leeds United.
The centre-back’s recent performances have come under increased scrutiny, his loss of form coinciding with United’s dwindling results. However, the Red Devils arrested their slump on Tuesday night with a win over Brighton and Hove Albion, a match in which Maguire kept a clean sheet and Ronaldo scored the opening goal.
