Ralf Rangnick has claimed Harry Maguire’s recent struggles are down to the centre-back failing to adapt to his playing style. The England international has come under increased scrutiny lately, as the Red Devils have stuttered.
The Manchester United manager remains confident in Maguire’s ability, however, stating that he doesn’t see any reason to strip away his captaincy as he continues to adapt to the system along with his peers.
“In the last two games he had some weaker moments both against Southampton and when we conceded the goal against Burnley,”
the German said.
“The way we are playing now is new to him because in the English national team he is used to playing in a back three and here at Manchester United in a back four — but not being as proactive with that kind of defense when we try and be on the front foot.
“But again, he is our captain and I don’t see any reason to change that. He is also a player who has to develop and get better like all the other players.”
Maguire’s recent downturn in form has coincided with Manchester United’s poor results of late. The Red Devils drew their previous two league games against Southampton and Burnley by the same scoreline, 1-1.
Before that, they suffered a humiliating exit in the FA Cup Fourth Round at the hands of Championship side Middlesbrough. Boro beat them on penalties after the game finished 1-1 in regular time, during which Cristiano Ronaldo had missed from the spot.

However, overall, Rangnick’s arrival has helped Manchester United scale back towards the top-end of the league table. At the risk of falling into the lower half during the final days of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, United are currently fifth, with 40 points – a point behind fourth-placed West Ham United with a game in hand.
The Red Devils are also scheduled to play Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League Round-of-16 next week, which happens to be their only remaining chance at winning a cup this season.
