Fabinho continued his recent hot streak by scoring the only goal in Liverpool’s win over Burnley on Sunday night. Elsewhere, Wolves took advantage of Spurs’ defensive howlers and came away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with three points.
The Reds kept up with the runaway league leaders Manchester City, thanks to a 1-0 win over Burnley on Sunday night. While the difference between the two sides still stands at nine points – although Liverpool have a game in hand – it could’ve been far worse had either Wout Weghorst or Jay Rodriguez taken their chances for the Clarets during the first half.
Alisson denied Rodriguez and clawed away a long-range shot from Josh Brownhill, while Weghorst failed to hit the target with two presentable opportunities.
The Reds took advantage of Burnley’s inability to convert their chances and edged in front with four minutes left in the first half. Central midfielder Fabinho scored from a corner; Sadio Mane flicked a Trent Alexander-Arnold delivery into a dangerous area, and the Brazilian latched onto the ball first, drawing a save on the line out of Nick Pope initially, before tucking in the rebound.
It was the only time in the game that Jurgen Klopp’s men got the better of Pope – but it was enough. Liverpool came away with three points, keeping up with the Citizens.
Further down the table, Tottenham took on Wolverhampton in a game that could have huge implications come the end of the season. Both the teams are locked in a closely contested top-four race alongside Manchester United, Arsenal, and West Ham United.
Despite playing in front of a strong home crowd, Spurs succumbed to a defeat entirely of their own making. Wolves scored first through Raul Jimenez in the sixth minute, the Mexico international volleying the ball into the net after a weak punch by Hugo Lloris presented him with the opportunity inside the box.
Eighteen minutes in and Lloris’s poor pass out from the back put Ben Davies in pressure, whose rushed clearance was collected, just outside the box, by Leander Dendoncker.
Nelson Semedo was played in, subsequently, and his cut-back for Daniel Podence resulted in a shot from the latter that was blocked by a retreating Spurs defence.
However, they failed to clear their lines in time, and Dendoncker tapped the loose ball past Lloris to make it 2-0 to Wolves – who held on for the remainder of the match for the win.
