Despite playing only half a season at Manchester United following his transfer from Real Madrid in the summer, France’s World Cup-winning defender Raphael Varane seems to have made up his mind: the Premier League is the best in the world.

The Frenchman has one of the most glittering CVs for a defender in world football right now. The 28-year-old has won four Champions Leagues, three La Liga titles, three UEFA Super Cups, four FIFA Club World Cups and of course, the FIFA World Cup. Varane has also played across three different leagues in his career.

Having made his debut with Lens in France, the centre-back moved to Real Madrid in 2011 to spend a wonderful decade at the Santiago Bernabeu. His transfer to Manchester United last summer was one of the most high-profile moves of that transfer window.

Despite appearing in just 12 matches for the Red Devils this season, Varane has no doubt in his mind that the Premier League is better than La Liga

“The pace of the game is at a really high level. It’s a great experience. I like the atmosphere around the stadiums. I like the mentality. It’s very intense but always in good spirit and very positive. This experience for me is great.”

    Varane told United’s website.

He also highlighted the depth of talent and quality in the Premier League with mid-table clubs and teams from the lower rungs of the table possessing the ability to surprise heavyweights.

    Wolves (A) ✅ 1-0
    Newcastle (H) ✅ 4-1
    West Ham (A) ✅ 2-1
    Tottenham (A) ✅ 3-0
    Newcastle (A) 🤝 1-1
    West Ham (H) ✅ 1-0

Goals conceded: 3 (0.5 per game)
    Win rate: 83%

The luxury of taking things lightly even while being in a comfortable position doesn’t exist in the Premier League, according to him.

“Yeah, the games are very difficult. You can’t be relaxed, you can be winning a game and you know if you have 10 minutes to play, anything can happen.

“I think it’s the best league in the world and the intensity is absolutely amazing. Every team has players with top quality. Tactically, it’s a very high level and there are a lot of players and coaches from everywhere.

So, it’s a mix about different cultures and different styles of players and of mentality.I think that is why the league is top because it’s the best from everywhere, you know,”

    he added.
