Indian opening batsman Shubman Gill shared an emotional tribute to Kolkata Knight Riders after he was picked by the Ahmedabad franchise ahead of the 2022 IPL mega auction.
Gill’s association with the Kolkata-based franchise came to an end ahead of the Indian Premier League 2022 as the youngster was snapped up by the new Ahmedabad franchise as a draft pick.
The former KKR player took to social media to share an emotional video tribute to the franchise by saying, “Kolkata, you were a dream.”
The franchise commented on the post with, “Forever and Always” while his former teammates Shivam Mavi, Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Nitish Rana commented with a star and heart emojis.
The Riders’ head coach Brendan McCullum and head scout AR Srikkanth also responded with heart emojis.
KKR also shared a photo collection of the 22-year-old and thanked him for the memories with a caption and shared a video montage of their own to honour their former player.
The Riders had acquired Gill’s services in the 2018 auction. The cricketer played 58 matches for the team and scored 1417 runs at an average of 31.5 and strike rate of 123, including 10 fifties, and was released ahead of the 2022 season as KKR opted to retain Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy and Venkatesh Iyer.
The two new franchises were given an option to pick up to three players as draft picks ahead of the 2022 IPL mega auction. Apart from Gill, the Ahmedabad franchise also picked Hardik Pandya as their skipper and Rashid Khan. The Lucknow-based franchise opted for KL Rahul as their captain and also signed Marcus Stoinis and Ravi Bishnoi.
The mega auction for the 2022 edition of the Indian Premier League will take place on February 12-13. 1214 players have put their names forward for what is rumoured to be the last mega auction.
