Former Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher was full of praise for the Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, who made a 30-million-pound move from Sheffield United to North London in August. This move was criticized severely by a lot of fans, as Ramsdale’s previous two involvements in the League saw his side get relegated with Bournemouth and Sheffield.
Having replaced the struggling Bernd Leno in goal, the 23-year-old has kept nine clean sheets thus far in the 16 league fixtures he has played. Some of these clean sheets also involve a few sensational saves, the most notable one being the double-save he made off James Maddison’s free-kick against Leicester City.
Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville sat down to list out the mid-season awards. They both agreed on Pep Guardiola as the manager of the season and Mohamed Salah as player of the season thus far, but had contrasting views on signing of the season.
The former Manchester United captain went for Jose Sa as his signing of the season, whilst ex-Liverpool defender went for Ramsdale.
“I went for Ramsdale because it was almost the biggest surprise to me. When they brought him in, I thought they were bringing him in as backup, and almost bringing him in because he was an English player, for the quota.
He hadn’t impressed me in his Premier League time at Sheffield United and Bournemouth. It’s not just the saves he’s made, he’s a personality, he’s a character.
just think he’s got a presence about him that I didn’t see that he had, and I think he’s had a big impact on the team,”
he said.
After a chaotic start to the season, Ramsdale’s arrival coinciding with Arsenal’s turn in fortune was clearly no coincidence. Currently, the side are fourth in the points table and are in a four-way battle with Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United for the final Champions League spot.
Both these Premier League legendt agreed on eight of the 11 players for the team of the season and agreed on the fact that Phil Foden has been the most impressive young player thus far.
They were also full of praise for Liverpool’s Diogo Jota, who scored 10 times in the league and has been one of the most impressive players this season going forward, scoring clutch goals for the side.
