Manchester United’s interim boss is looking to resurrect the club after a disappointing start to this season. A lot of names have been linked to the club since he has been in charge and the Red Devils are expected to move for a defensive midfielder in the January transfer window.
According to The Sun, this young German star is Ralf Rangnick’s number one target. Florian Wirtz, who became the youngest ever player to represent Bayer Leverkusen in the 2019/20 season, has been in exceptional form and has been on the radar of many clubs.
If reports are to be believed, Rangnick sees the creative midfielder as one of the prime options to join the squad, potentially in the summer transfer window as his 60 million euros price tag makes it difficult to lure him away from Germany in January.
The 18-year-old has been directly involved in 19 goals this season in 20 appearances, scoring eight times and assisting 11. He has already made 67 appearances for the club and is a regular starter for Leverkusen, who are currently fourth in the points table. He was Bundesliga’s youngest-ever goal-scorer, a record later trumped by Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko. He even earned a national call-up this year, making four appearances for Germany in nearly no time.
Rangnick’s many years in Germany means United scouting will happen quite heavily in Bundesliga, and the Sun have quoted a source saying that the former RB Leipzig manager can help the club steal a march on some of German talents.
Wirtz is not the only Bundesliga talent heavily linked with the English club right now, with two other names from Leipzig very much in the shopping cart. Amadou Haidara and Tyler Adams, two very highly rated defensive midfielders, are well appreciated by the club, and United being the former’s favourite club makes him a definitive option.
They are also looking at Boubacar Kamara from Marseille, who will be running out of contract this summer. The 22-year-old is available for just 10 million euros, and plenty of Premier League clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea and Newcastle United are eyeing to lure him.
