Jesse Lingard will reportedly not leave Manchester United in the upcoming January transfer window, whereas Newcastle United are eyeing Anthony Martial on a loan deal.
Lingard could yet end the season at United, reports The Athletic. The Englishman has been linked with a move to Newcastle and West Ham and, with his contract expiring in 2022, was largely expected to leave the club in the January transfer window.
However, Lingard is now expected to stay at Old Trafford until the summer and fight for a place in new manager Ralf Rangnick’s plans. How that affects his future plans is yet to be seen; United’s attempts to extend the 29-year-old’s contract were rebuffed, and talks were at a standstill as per the reports from last month.
A Man Utd academy graduate, Lingard spent the latter half of the 2020/21 season on loan at West Ham after falling out of favor under the then manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The Englishman produced a return of nine goals in 16 matches during his time at the Olympic Stadium before returning to his parent club in the summer.
One Manchester United player who could leave the club in January is Anthony Martial. The Frenchman has seen game time cut following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer and is a target for the newly-rich, albeit relegation-threatened, Newcastle United.
The Sun reports that the Magpies are looking to add the forward to their ranks temporarily in January as they make a push for survival in the Premier League. However, they will have to pay a small 6 million pounds loan fee to take Martial for the remainder of the season while also fighting Juventus – who are also keen on his signature.
Martial joined Manchester United in 2015 from AS Monaco and has since appeared more than 250 times for the Red Devils, scoring 79 goals. The 26-year-old delivered his best season in 2019/20 as he scored 23 goals in 48 appearances, but his production declined sharply the following year when he scored just seven in 36. He has one goal from 10 appearances this season.
