After a significant number of errors, the UEFA Champions League 2021/22 round of 16 draw was redone after clubs like Atletico Madrid, Villarreal and several others complained about the technical errors leading up to the draw. Andriy Arshavin, the ambassador for the final this season, which will be hosted in Petersburg, carried out the procession once again.
Defending champions Chelsea managed to draw French league champions LOSC Lille twice in a span of three hours, whilst Atletico Madrid, who led the protest after the initial draw, managed to get Manchester United in the second go. Bayern Munich, the 2020 winners, will be playing against Austrian club RB Salzburg.
One of the fixtures of the round will be between Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid, who have played out some exhilarating contests between each other in the last decade. However, the side haven’t met each other since Cristiano Ronaldo moved out of Spain.
Inter Milan will play against facing 2019 champions Liverpool, whilst Manchester City will face the Portuguese league champions Sporting Lisbon.
Another exhilarating edition of the UEFA Champions League group stages came to an end with some heavyweights of the competition finding the exit doors. FC Barcelona and 1997 winners Borussia Dortmund made their way into the Europa League, having finished third in their respective groups, whilst AC Milan finished bottom of Group B.
Bayern Munich, Ajax and Liverpool remained the only teams in this season’s group stage to win all their fixtures. Jurgen Klopp’s men have also become the first English side to do so.
Erik Ten Hag-led side are on a sensational run across all competitions, and they defeated the likes of Sporting Lisbon and Borussia home and away in their group.
