Argentine legend Diego Maradona’s watch, which was stolen a long time ago, was allegedly recovered in Assam’s Sivasagar district. The police have arrested one person in connection to the theft.
Maradona, who passed away in November 2020, is assumed to have lost the valuable watch in the United Arabic Emirates, where the accused was working as a security guard of a company based in Dubai.
The accused is suspected of having stolen the limited edition Hublot timepiece, which Maradona had kept in a safe, according to DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta. The arrested person allegedly worked for a few days at the company before requesting permission to return home for a few days citing his father’s illness.
The Assam police launched an investigation as to his whereabouts following a tip by the Dubai Police, who provided the Assam police with essential details about the suspect, a police official told the media.
Famous for the “Hand of God” goal in the 1986 World Cup, Maradona lost the watch quite some time ago and recovered after tracking down the accused.
Following the tip, Assam Police arrested the suspect at 4 am from his residence, and the missing timepiece was found, officials said. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed that the operation was a result of international coordination involving the police forces of both countries.
It has also been informed to the press that further legal action will be pursued against the accused.
