Chelsea star Jorginho had a hand in both the goals – one at each end – in the Blues’ 1-1 draw against Manchester United. The Italian central midfielder’s error allowed Jadon Sancho to open the scoring at Stamford Bridge with his first league goal for Manchester United. However, the 29-year-old later scored from the spot to rescue a well-deserved point for Thomas Tuchel’s side.
Callum Hudson-Odoi nearly scored for the home side after just four minutes. The youngster capitalized on a poor attempted clearance from Victor Lindelof to dash into the penalty box with the ball. But, his attempt to curl it past David De Gea was thwarted by an excellent save from the Manсhester United custodian. Later, just past the half-hour mark, Antonio Rudiger rattled the crossbar with a thunderbolt from outside the box as the Blues looked for the breakthrough to match their dominance.
However, United took the lead against the run of play – five minutes after the interval. Bruno Fernandes’ clearance from a Chelsea set-piece landed into the feet of Jorginho on the halfway line. The Italian’s heavy touch allowed Sancho to steal the ball off him, run unchecked into the Chelsea box, and slot the ball past Edouard Mendy for his first league goal.
Nonetheless, Jorginho atoned for his mistake in the 69th minute from the penalty spot; the midfielder scored with his trademark hop, skip, and jump technique after Aaron Wan-Bissaka had fouled Thiago Silva inside the box.
As the clock ran down, Chelsea piled on the pressure. Tuchel introduced Mason Mount, Romelu Lukaku, and Christian Pulisic in an attempt to swing the tie in his team’s favor, and Pulisic nearly came up with the match-winning assist, only for Rudiger to blast his deep cross high and wide from close range.
Despite holding much of the territory and registering 24 shots compared to Manchester United’s three, Chelsea had to settle for a draw. Their lead at the top is down to one following Manchester City’s earlier win over West Ham United.
