Reports claim that the German has also been confirmed with a consultancy role for two years after the six months in charge as interim manager, which means he will be overseeing a lot of decisions relating to the footballing operations at the club.
It was confirmed by The Athletic that his agreement is subject to his current employers Lokomotiv Moscow, but United reckon this will not be a major problem for the club. Since he hasn’t secured work permits as yet in England, he will not be taking charge of the club to oversee the game against Chelsea, a club manager by Rangnick’s former student Thomas Tuchel.
Rangnick has the experience of managing Hannover, Schalke 04, Hoffenheim, and RB Leipzig. But beyond this, Rangnick is regarded as one of the godfathers of modern football for his work in bringing some tactical styles like gegenpressing into fray.
The likes of Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Tuchel have mastered the art in recent times, and both of them have already added a Champions League title in their cabinet.
If the deal goes through, it will be his first taste of English football. Rangnick is currently the head of sports and development at the Russian club, a job he took in July. The 63-year-old is expected to begin his duties next week after he receives his work permit.
The 20-time English champions sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on November 21 after the side had lost 4-1 to Watford at the Vicarage Road. A run of poor results had impacted the morale significantly at the club, who were expecting big things after heavy spending in the summer window, including the return of their beloved prodigy Cristiano Ronaldo.
A lot of names including Ernesto Valverde, Rudi Garcia, Lucien Favre and a couple of other people alongside Rangnick have been in the news as potential candidates for the interim role in the scenario of United failing to secure Mauricio Pochettino’s (PSG) services, who is a difficult buy in the middle of the season.
