Manchester United are in the market looking for an interim or permanent manager having sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after the Norwegian stayed in charge for nearly three years. The 20-time English champions announced that Michael Carrick will be acting as a caretaker manager until the club can find an interim to see through this season.
The Red Devils have been heavily linked with PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino, who is unhappy at the club according to multiple reports and doesn’t want to miss out on a chance to return to the Premier League. However, there is another name taking round in the transfer market, one that may or may not satisfy the United fans.
Ernesto Valverde, who won multiple league titles during his reign at Barcelona, has been tipped to become the interim manager as United’s prime targets for full-time role – Mauricio Pochettino, Erik Ten Haag, Brendan Rodgers, are all in employment, and it won’t be possible for them to lure these men away midseason.
The 57-year-old has found success with the Catalans, but his failure to provide them a Champions League title resulted in his sacking in January 2020. He won two La Liga titles and one Copa Del Rey during his time at the Camp Nou and has previously worked as a head coach at Athlelic Bilbao, Espanyol, Olympiacos, Villarreal and Valencia.
If reports are to be believed, Pochettino and Ten Haag will be ready to accept the Manchester United job if they are offered the role after the end of this season. Although both these highly-rated managers turned down speculations during their Champions League press conferences this mid-week, it is being said that the United board is desperate to land one of them to take the club forward.
Manchester United responded brilliantly after the sacking of the 99-treble winner, registering a much-needed 2-0 win against Villarreal at the Estadio de la Ceramica. Two late goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho allowed Carrick to oversee the club’s first clean sheet in the Champions League this season and took them through to the round of 16.
