A 5-0 loss against rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford wasn’t enough to displace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from the Manchester United managerial position. He is expected to survive the latest collapse against Manchester City, too.
That results haven’t gone United’s way is an understatement; the team has looked second-best in most matches this season, going on to lose some of those in humiliating ways. The latest collapse took place at Old Trafford, in front of a raucous home crowd, against fierce rivals Manchester City. Yet Ole Gunnar Solskjaer – who also oversaw his team’s sensational 5-0 reverse against Liverpool weeks ago – is thought to be safe from the sack for now.
The Athletic reports that, despite an inconsistent start to the season, there are no indications yet that Manchester United are looking to make a change in the managerial position. The club hopes to reach the end of the 2021/22 season with the incumbent coaching structure before evaluating their options.
Furthermore, there is also disinclination to fire the Norwegian while the team is still in contention for the UEFA Champions League. The side are top of Group F with seven points after four games played. However, the Red Devils are only two points ahead of third-placed Atalanta, whom they secured a late draw against in their latest fixture.
As per the report, another contributing factor towards the board’s reluctance to get rid of Solskjaer is the limited pool of available managers. The club was linked with Antonio Conte immediately after the embarrassment at the hands of Liverpool but passed up the opportunity to appoint the Italian on that occasion.
As it turned out, the ex-Chelsea manager would replace Nuno Espirito Santo at Tottenham just days later. United have also previously shown interest in appointing Mauricio Pochettino; they have been linked with Zinedine Zidane and Ralf Rangnick, too.
Barring any rapid and unforeseen developments, Solskjaer will be in the dugout on November 20 when United face Watford on the other side of the international break. The Red Devils are sixth in the Premier League going into the two-week break – nine points behind leaders Chelsea, who they face on November 28.
