Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with Antonio Conte to take over as the first-team manager following Nuno Espirito Santo’s dismissal. Newcastle United, meanwhile, are set to appoint former Arsenal boss Unai Emery.
Antonio Conte will return to the Premier League to manage Tottenham Hotspur, the club have confirmed via Twitter. He will take over from Nuno Espirito Santo, who was dismissed by the club on Monday morning.
The Athletic reported that the Italian will meet the Tottenham players for the first time on Tuesday and will conduct the afternoon training session. The former Italy and Juventus boss had rejected Tottenham in the summer for undisclosed reasons, following which, the club went through a list of potential candidates – including Paulo Fonseca and Gennaro Gattuso – before finally appointing Nuno.
Conte had a successful stint in the English top-flight with Spurs’ London rivals Chelsea, with whom he won the league title in his first season and the FA Cup in his second.
The Italian has been without a job since leaving Inter Milan in the summer. He led the club to their first domestic title since 2010, ending a near-decade-long dominance of Juventus.
In other managerial news, Newcastle United are down to two in their search for a manager. According to The Athletic, reports that the Magpies’ new ownership group has selected ex-Arsenal boss Unai Emery and former Bournemouth head coach boss Eddie Howe as the two potential candidates to take over from the dismissed Steve Bruce.
Emery is thought to be the leading candidate, with Howe as the alternative. The Spaniard is currently employed by LaLiga club Villarreal, which he led to the UEFA Europa League title in 2020/21 by beating Manchester United in the final.
Newcastle will have to buy Emery out of his Villarreal contract, a transaction expected to cost them six million euros. Negotiations are underway between the relevant parties, and an agreement is yet to be reached.
Presiding over Arsenal for a season-and-a-half, Emery led the Gunners to a Europa League final as well, only to lose 4-1 to rivals Chelsea.
